About the Molecular Infectious Disease Laboratory

The Genetics & IVF Institute (GIVF) is proud to announce the addition of its newest division, the Molecular Infectious Disease Laboratory (MIDL). GIVF has long been recognized for its expertise in molecular and medical genetics, and has now extended the use of molecular technologies to the highly sensitive, specific, and rapid detection of clinical infections. The MIDL is a CLIA certified facility dedicated to infectious disease diagnostics using exclusively high quality Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR*) DNA amplification technology. Molecular infectious disease testing by PCR directly detects pathogen-specific nucleic acid, rather than relying on cultures, immunoreactivity or serology to identify the organism.

Advantages to using MIDL include:

•Improved sensitivity - MIDL uses extremely sensitive and specific "nested" PCR protocols that enable detection of low-level, early stage infections. DNA amplification-based methodology for detection of bacteria, viruses and parasites offers increased sensitivity over traditional methods, particularly for viruses and difficult to culture organisms.

•Accurate organism identification - Since the assay detects specific genetic sequences unique to viruses and microorganisms, the infectious agent is definitively identified.
